Irish Author

When Bruno returns home from school one day, he discovers that his belongings are being packed in crates. His father has received a promotion and the family must move from their home to a new house far far away, where there is no one to play with and nothing to do. A tall fence running alongside stretches as far as the eye can see and cuts him off from the strange people he can see in the distance.
But Bruno longs to be an explorer and decides that there must be more to this desolate new place than meets the eye. While exploring his new environment, he meets another boy whose life and circumstances are very different to his own, and their meeting results in a friendship that has devastating consequences.

I've been interested in the holocaust since I learned about it in school and when I found this book I had to read it. It was a really good book that I gave it five stars. Now I changed that to four.
I like it because it shows the point of view of a German family and you get to see all the different opinions they could have had. We sometimes tend to think that all Germans had to agree on this. Also because we can learn a lot of things through a child's innocent perspective, they sometimes make mistakes because they're afraid, but just as easily they can overcome them.
However, the author seems to repeat things a lot. I've noticed sometimes they repeat things in series so you know what happened in the previous books, but here they repeat the same sentence more than once and sometimes in the same chapter. I had already read this and I don't remember paying attention to this. I guess it was the first time and I was reading it because it was from the holocaust so I was more interested in the story. Now is the second time so I'm noticing more things than just wondering what is happening, though it still depresses me; I needed something to cheer me up every time I closed the book for the day. (It makes me sad because I know it happened before and it was really awful, more than I can imagine)
The description given in the end makes it so real, even though I had already read it and knew what was going to happen, it still made me feel like I was there reliving everything.
I feel like the last chapter needs a little more details right towards the end. It sounds to me like he was just waiting to finish or that it wasn't as important, so he wrote as little as possible.
I still like this book a lot and would recommend it to everyone.

  1. Sarah Rees Brennan (The Demon's Lexicon) and Sarah Webb (Ask Amy Green) are two good middle grade authors who are Irish. Half tempted to do this challenge!
